FAQ
D.O.s, or Doctor of Osteopathy, are licensed physicians, equivalent to an M.D., who went to 4 years of medical school just like their allopathic counter parts, but studied an additional 500+ hrs of Osteopathic manual medicine. They learn to diagnose and treat with their hands. Both D.O.s and M.D.s can choose any residency in their desired specialty. Those that specialized in manual medicine sometimes distinguish themselves as Cranial Osteopaths. The way they practice medicine has a more traditional Osteopathic philosophy, in the sense that they treat the patient as a whole: body, mind, and spirit.
A Cranial Osteopath, is a D.O. who graduated from medical school in the United States. They are licensed physicians, who have completed their internship/residency and have the ability to prescribe medications, do surgery, and practice medicine. A licensed massage therapist performs Craniosacral Therapy. They are trained in the technique in addition to their massage school training.
The first visit is about 90min. You should have received forms to fill out, which are pertinent for the
success of establishing a relationship with your practitioner and to help inform them on how to help you on your healing journey. Everything on the forms are important to us. This may take some time to get through but well worth it. You will also receive a general physical exam for completeness. Every initial exam consists of a 40min osteopathic treatment, to evaluate structure and function from head to toe. You will be fully clothed, relaxing on your back, and very little participation on your part.
Your initial visit will be approximately 90 minutes long, and will consist of a detailed history, basic physical exam, extensive osteopathic exam, and 40 minute osteopathic treatment with you lying down.
As an alumni from Western University of Health Sciences, COMP, Dr Kodama’s way of giving back to her school is to inspire young student physicians to use their hands and be comfortable and confident to treat their patients. Third or fourth year medical students from osteopathic schools across the country rotate through the office. Whether they are doing a 4 week Core rotation, or a 2 week elective, each student will assist me in your experience in the office. Of course you have the option to refuse, but you have so much to teach them with your healing journey. We would all be honored to be a part of it. And last but not least, Coco, the miracle pup, will greet you with a loud, “HERRRO”!!!, and then melt in your arms or sleep under your chair.
We are only contracted with Medicare. If you have a PPO and have out-of-network benefits, you will receive a superbill as a courtesy to submit to your insurance.
Cranial Osteopathy can address birth trauma on a very deep level. Osteopathic manipulation with
gentle techniques strives to remove strains in the body, and awaken pathways that are keeping baby from learning to adapt to their new environment. Plagiocephaly, torticollis, breast feeding issues, sleep issues, poor digestion, colic, are all ways that baby is crying out for help.
Depending on how much detoxing you need, Dr Kodama suggests once a week. Usually the heavy
metals that precipitate on the towel is a good indication for the frequency. Other indicators to do sauna weekly would be your symptoms. Long Covid symptoms can sometimes resolve in one sauna, so like all treatments, it depends on patient to patient.
For decompensated patients or non ambulatory patients, once a week is optimal. Since it mimics
exercise, consistency is key. Allowing at least 4 treatments for results to take effect is recommended
(from personal experience).
On the surface of the skin, the Shockwave pulse feels like a “rubber band snapping on the skin”, prickley, but target pain scale is gradually increased to 4-6/10. Now when pulsating over areas of inflammation, adhesion, or target painful areas, the sensation is more of a deeper, dull ache in the tissue. The goal is not to “endure” the pain. We want the brain to start to explore different sensations and become adventurous.
Hypnotherapy is a safe and modern type of therapy in which a deep and comfortable state of relaxation, focused attention, and hyper-suggestability is created. That allows for positive suggestions to be given directly to your subconscious mind resolving any conflicts between it and your conscious mind. It is these conflicts that are preventing long lasting, positive changes to occur in your life.
